.308 Winchester is one of the most widely used centrefire rifle calibres in Australia, which means it's also one of the most common ammo storage questions we get: what actually fits it properly?
Why generic storage falls short
.308 Win sits in an awkward middle ground for a lot of off-the-shelf ammo boxes — too long for small-calibre trays, but not a magnum case-head either. Loose-fitting storage means rounds rattle, roll, and are slower to grab under time pressure at the range or in the field.
What actually fits .308 Win
Bore diameter is the number that matters — the largest part of the cartridge entering the pocket (case head, in this instance) has to fit within the tray's stated bore. .308 Win falls into our Hunter tray family, alongside similar case-head calibres like .270 Win, .243 Win, 7mm-08 Rem and .30-06 Sprg. Two ways to store it
