5.56 NATO and .223 Rem are close enough in dimensions to share the same storage tray, which makes them one of the easiest calibres to sort out proper ammo storage for — provided you know which tray family to look for.
The fit basics
5.56 / .223 sits in our Varmint tray family, alongside .222 Rem and .204 Ruger — smaller case-head calibres with a shorter, tighter pocket than a full-size hunting round. Bore diameter and pocket depth are listed on the Calibre Compatibility Guide if you want to check your own brass against the numbers before ordering.
Storage options
- The Universal Tray Insert System (Varmint tray) holds 50 rounds in indexed pockets — available as the insert alone (fits a Tactix Tough Case) or as the Complete Case with the hard case included.
- The Sleeve Case covers 5.56 / .223 in both 20-round and 50-round capacities, in a compact, calibre-marked sleeve that stacks flat in a range bag or safe.
