5.56 / .223 Ammo Storage: Which Case Fits

5.56 NATO and .223 Rem are close enough in dimensions to share the same storage tray, which makes them one of the easiest calibres to sort out proper ammo storage for — provided you know which tray family to look for.

The fit basics

5.56 / .223 sits in our Varmint tray family, alongside .222 Rem and .204 Ruger — smaller case-head calibres with a shorter, tighter pocket than a full-size hunting round. Bore diameter and pocket depth are listed on the Calibre Compatibility Guide if you want to check your own brass against the numbers before ordering.

Storage options

  • The Universal Tray Insert System (Varmint tray) holds 50 rounds in indexed pockets — available as the insert alone (fits a Tactix Tough Case) or as the Complete Case with the hard case included.
  • The Sleeve Case covers 5.56 / .223 in both 20-round and 50-round capacities, in a compact, calibre-marked sleeve that stacks flat in a range bag or safe.
